I’ve previously written about the family mystery I have (see A Family Mystery, A Family Mystery (part 2), and A Family Mystery (part 3) for the story so far), but I’ve realised that in my searches so far, I’ve not looked far enough afield in the search for how Linda may connect to the family.

True, she may have been truly adopted and not related to the family at all, but she may have also have been a niece or even a cousin of her adoptive parents, and as such, I need to be looking into the siblings of George and Helen, as well as the siblings of their respective parents. That’s a lot of people; George was the 7th child of 10, and Helen the 12th child of 14 – and their parent’s didn’t exactly come from small families either.

So, I need to research more about the extended families, that is, the siblings and descendants of Robert, Jane, George, James, Elizabeth and Helen.

Ancestors of Linda McDonald

Purported Ancestors of Linda McDonald

So, how many people do I have to “chase”, and who are they?

Looking at the siblings of Linda’s purported grandparents first.

Alexander McDONALD (Alias BADENOCH) and Jannet GREENHILL had 8 known children, some used the McDonald surname, others used the Badenoch surname.
1. Charles, born about July 1809 in Lintrathen, Forfarshire, Scotland
Charles married Jesse GREENHILL and had at least one child, Robert, born in 1839. Jesse died in childbirth with her unborn child in 1853. The 14 years in between is plenty of time for other children to have been born so I’ll need to look for those, and to find out what happened to his son Robert in later years.
2. Jeen, also known as Jane, born about May 1811
Jeen / Jane married David KYDD and had at least 6 children, John, born in 1835, David, born in 1838, James, born in 1841, Elisabeth, born in 1842, Jane, born in 1845, and Anne, born in 1851.
It is known that at least one of these children married and went on to have children of their own, but more research is needed on all of them.

3. Jannet, born about August 1813
I know nothing about her life, research is needed.
4. Robert, born about July 1815 and died on 16 August 1890 in Finavon, Tannadice, Forfarshire, Scotland
Robert is the direct line ancestor
5. George, born about May 1817
I know nothing about his life, research is needed.
6. Ann, born about November 1819
I know nothing about her life, research is needed.
7. Margaret, born about July 1822
I know nothing about her life, research is needed.
8. Mary, born about 1826
I know nothing about her life, research is needed.

William FERRIER and Elisabeth STOTT had 3 known children.
1. Isabel, born 1 August 1816 in Brechin, Forfarshire, Scotland
Isabel married James Eddie but I don’t yet know if they had any children or not
2. Alexander, born on 5 December 1817 and died on 13 November 1885 in Brechin, Forfarshire, Scotland.
Alexander married Mary Anne Hunter and had two known children. Mary, born on 30 September 1846, and Martha born on 24 May 1848. I need to investigate these two further and see if I can locate any other children as well.
3. Jane, born about 1823 in Brechin, Forfarshire, Scotland and died on 11 October 1902 in Oathlaw, Forfarshire, Scotland.
Jane is the direct line ancestor.

James MARSHALL and Christian (or Christina) THOMSON had 8 known children.
1. David, born on 8 September 1805 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland and died on 17 May 1878 in Clackmannanshire, Scotland.
David married Ann Clow and had two known children. James, born on 5 August 1827 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland, and Christina, born on 29 July 1829 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland and died in 1886 in Galashiels, Scotland.
I need to research the son James further, as well as see if there are any further siblings, but at least some of Christina’s descendants are known. Further checking of her descendants would be prudent however.

2. James Marshall was born on 12 July 1807 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland, died on 16 August 1887 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland, and was buried on 17 August 1887 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland.
James is the direct line ancestor.
3. Francis Marshall was born on 21 June 1809 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland, died in May 1843 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland, and was buried on 10 May 1843 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland.
Francis married Jean Winton and had 4 known children. James, born in 1836 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland and died in 1920 in New Zealand, Elizabeth, born about 1838, Francis, born about 1840, and Christian, born about 1843.
James is known to have married and some descendants are known, but more research is needed for all four children.

4. Daniel Marshall was born on 3 July 1811 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland and died in 1823 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland.
Dying at the age of 12, there is virtually no possibility of children, minimal research needed.
5. Mary Marshall was born on 13 August 1813 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland and died in 1853 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland.
Mary is believed to have married James Duncan, and to have had at least one child, James, born about 1841. More research is needed.

No possibility of children, no research needed.

James REID and Janet MARSHALL had 6 known children.
1. James, born on 19 April 1806 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland.
I know nothing about his life, research is needed.
2. Robt, born on 21 September 1808 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland.
Robt (Robert?) is believed to have married Janet Nicol and had six children. Isabella, born about 1844, Janet born about 1848, Robert, born about 1850, Grace, born about June 1850, Elizabeth, born about 1854, and James, born about 1856.
Nothing is known about the lives and possible descendants of these children, so more research is needed.

3. Elizabeth Reid was born on 10 October 1811 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland, died on 24 May 1891 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland, and was buried after 25 May 1891 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland.
James is the direct line ancestor.
4. Catherine Reid was born on 2 April 1814 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland.
Catherine is believed to have been alive in 1851, but more research is needed as to any potential marriage and children
5. Jannat Reid was born about 1819 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland.
Jannat is believed to have married a man surnamed Gardner and to have had two children, James, born about 1838, and Janet, born about 1841. More research is needed.
6. Robert Reid was born about 1834.
There is doubt as to whether Robert is the biological child of James Reid and Janet Marshall as indicated on the 1841 Scotland census, or if he is another relation to them. Grandchild is suspected due to age gaps but further research is needed to ascertain actual parentage and later life events.

Looking at the siblings of Linda’s purported parents next.

Robert McDONALD married Jane FERRIER and had 10 known children
1. Alexander, born on 7 February 1844 in Parkford, Forfarshire, Scotland
There is a family story of him being a Prisoner of War during the Spanish American Civil War after originally having run away to sea at the age of 9. More research is needed to determine the truth of these stories, and to whether he ever married and had children or not.
2. Margaret, born on 5 September 1848 in Oathlaw, Forfarshire, Scotland
Margaret is known to have married Charles Stewart, but it is not known if they had any children. More research needed.
3. Jannet, born on 17 February 1851 in Oathlaw, Forfarshire, Scotland and died before 1861.
Jannet is believed to have died as a child due to the later birth and naming of another daughter with the same name.
4. David, born on 31 October 1852 in Bogindollo, Forfarshire, Scotland and died on 27 November 1931 in South Africa.
Many of David’s descendants are already known, but these should be looked at again. Limited research needed.
5. William McDonald was born on 29 November 1854 in Bogindollo, Forfarshire, Scotland and died before March 1861.
William is believed to have died as a child due to the later birth and naming of another son with the same name.

Robert is known to have married Margaret Bruce and to have had 4 known children, Catherine, born about 1889, Robert, born about 1891, George, born about 1892, and David, born about 1898.
More research is needed for these children and to determine if there were any other siblings born in the six year gap, but it is unlikely that Linda belongs to this family, unless she is older than originally thought.

9. Janet McDonald was born on 13 February 1866 in Gellyburn, Tannadice, Forfarshire, Scotland, died on 22 December 1940 in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia
Janet is known to have married William Stewart and to have had 8 known children, Jane, born 1888, Charles, born 1891, Annie, born 1892, Margaret, born 1894, William, born 1897, Elizabeth, born 1899, Catherine, born 1901, and David, born 1903.
It is unlikely that Linda belongs to this family as they came to Australia after Linda was already established within her new family, and the child born in 1899’s life is known.

10. William McDonald was born on 8 August 1868 in Gellyburn, Tannadice, Forfarshire, Scotland
There is a family story of William being associated with the Hong Kong Police and having been killed in the Boxer Rebellion around 1901. More research is needed to ascertain the truth of this story and to whether he ever married or not.

More research is needed for many of these children, as only 4 are known to have married, but none are known to have had children.
2. Margaret, born on 7 February 1832 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland
and died after 1901.
Margaret is known to have married William Harris, and is believed to have had 10 children, three for whom names and dates are unknown, John, birthdate unknown, Amilia, born about 1856, William, born about 1858, Christina, born about 1862, Isabella, born about 1865, Charles, born about 1867, David, born about 1870.
More research is clearly needed about this family.

Michael, born about 1864, Archibald, born about 1868, James, born about 1875, Lizzie, born about 1878, Mary, born about 1879. A sixth child Christina born about 1889 is attributed to Christian as well, however the ages involved make this relationship suspect. More research is needed regarding this family.
6. Catherine, born on 9 January 1839 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland and is believed to have died between 1881 and 1891.
Catherine is believed to have married John Young, but more research is needed to ascertain if they had any children.

12. Helen, born on 23 March 1849 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland, died on 12 July 1931 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Helen is the direct line ancestor
13. John, born on 29 July 1851 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland, died on 21 February 1877 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland
John is believed to have never married and to have had no children, however given that he was 25 when he died, marriage and children is still possible. More research is needed.
14. Amelia, born about 1855, died on 5 April 1855 in Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland
No possibility of children, no research needed.

Roughly 85 people needing research that will likely lead me to more people needing research.

I think I’m going to be busy for a long time yet.
